The strelitzia is also known as the crane flower or ‘bird of paradise’ plant for obvious reasons. I grew up with these beauties in the garden as they are native to South Africa where I’m from.

It features on the South African 50 cent piece and is also the floral emblem for the city of Los Angeles, California. But for me, they’re just a reminder of how cheerful flowers are and why they have been used as symbols of caring and to cheer us up since forever ago.
